*UPDATE (4/17/18 at 6:30pm central)*
The Internal Revenue Service announced today that it is providing taxpayers an additional day to file and pay their taxes following system issues that surfaced early on the April 17 tax deadline. Individuals and businesses with a filing or payment due date of April 17 will now have until midnight on Wednesday, April 18. Taxpayers do not need to do anything to receive this extra time.

Not that you need a reminder, but it’s tax day — the deadline for most taxpayers to file an extension and to pay taxes owed to avoid penalty and interest charges. If you file for an extension for your client, their return is due October 15, 2018 (the due date for 1041 is also April 17, but the extension for these is Sept 30). Special rules may apply if they’re in the military or live outside the U.S.
