Digital Assets: Tax Fundamentals, Emerging Issues, and 2026 Legislative Developments
Watch the replay!
This two-hour webinar provides a practical, tax advisor-focused overview of the taxation of digital assets, progressing from foundational concepts to intermediate-level tax analysis and recent legislative developments.
Participants will gain a working understanding of how cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, and other blockchain-based assets are classified and taxed under current U.S. federal income tax law, including key principles such as property treatment, realization events, and reporting obligations.
The course then builds into more complex topics such as mining and staking income, DeFi transactions, NFT considerations, basis tracking challenges, and common compliance pitfalls. Special emphasis is placed on the application of existing tax rules—originally designed for securities, commodities, or foreign currency—to digital assets, which often create gaps, inconsistencies, and uncertainty.
The program concludes with an in-depth discussion of recent 2025–2026 legislative and regulatory developments, including:
• Proposed federal tax legislation aimed at modernizing digital asset taxation (e.g., simplified reporting, de minimis rules, and treatment of staking and mining income)
• Expanded IRS reporting requirements, including Form 1099-DA and cost-basis reporting regimes effective in 2026
• Broader regulatory initiatives such as the CLARITY Act and stablecoin legislation establishing clearer market structure and oversight
